Hello! My name is Ben Jones (he/him) and I am a Licensed Professional Counseling Associate under the supervision of Jennifer Williams Buffalo, MA, LPC-S, LMFT, NCC. If you’re looking at this page, I assume you’re looking for a therapist for either yourself or someone you care about. I’ll go ahead and talk a little about who I am and my ideology.
As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, a survivor of religious trauma, and someone who suffers from a chronic physical illness, I know that life is full of ups and downs. There are ups, where we are able to find out who we are and live authentically as ourselves, ups where we can develop fulfilling relationships with our families and friends, and ups where we are able to do the tasks that used to be so daunting or draining. Counters to these are the downs of life. Downs where we feel overwhelmed, lost, or even angry; downs where we lose sight of who we are and what we want in life; and downs where we lose the faith in ourselves or energy to do our activities of daily living.
At this point you may be thinking, “what I’ve read sounds great and all, but how is this white cisgender man going to be able to understand my experience,” and you’re right! I know that my experience is not universal and that's why I love therapy so much: it lets us get together and better understand each other for who we are, something that goes beyond our physical appearance. I may not be able to relate with you on every experience, but I know that I can listen, learn, and validate your experiences so that we can develop a therapeutic bond that allows for positive change.
From my work as a Case Worker in community mental health, my time spent acquiring my masters degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Texas Woman’s University, and my internship at a partial hospitalization program for teens, I have gained a love and appreciation for Person-Centered Therapy. To me the most important part of therapy is developing an authentic therapeutic bond where you, as the client, feel empowered to talk about things you feel you need to talk about and make the changes you want to make. Along with this framework, I take skills from Emotion-Focused and Cognitive-Behavioral Therapies, as I know sometimes having some structure in sessions can be valuable.
My hope for my clients is for them to become the authentic, genuine, and amazing human being I know that we all can be. If you would like to see if this would work for you, feel free to schedule a free, no-strings-attached, 30-minute consultation with me using the contact form below.
