What is a support group? Expand

A support group provides an opportunity for people to share personal experiences and feelings, coping strategies, or firsthand information about a similar experience they share. A support group’s aim is to help you cope, and to feel less alone as you walk this path.

How is it different from a process group? Expand

Group therapy or “process groups” involve a group of people meeting regularly to work on their internal mental and emotional issues with others in a group setting, with the desired end result being deep personal change. Group therapy offers support to participants, in a way that is structured, and focuses on the individual growth of each member with the help of the facilitator, who is a licensed mental health professional.

Is a support group the same as therapy? Expand

No, it isn’t. While both support groups and group therapy offer support, the goal of group therapy is to help members change, while the goal of support groups is to help members cope. Support groups tend to have a particular theme, such as people who have just lost a pet or other loved one, and all who attend have some connection to that theme. Will I be required to share? Expand

In our support groups you can expect a non-judgmental space where you can choose to participate as little or as much as feels ok for you.

Can I share by writing/typing it out or do I have to speak on camera? Expand

You are free to write or type out what you would like to share, there’s no need to speak on camera. The facilitator will read what you share out loud for you.

Does my camera need to be on? Expand

In short, yes. It helps everyone to feel safer when they can see one another during the support group.  We will have some complete camera off groups if there is enough interest.  Please let us know by reaching out to us at contact@luminarycounseling.com

How do I participate? Expand

To participate in one of our groups, all you have to do is click the link and sign up via the Google Form. Your information is confidential, and once completed we will reach out to you with more details about the group.

How many groups can I attend? Expand

You can attend as many or as few groups as you would like. Regular attendance is not mandatory nor expected, and some participants may attend for a few weeks, then not for a few weeks, then return later on when they need more support.  Minimal commitment is required, and the group size may be very different from week to week, as our topics rotate.

If I am having trouble registering for the online groups what do I do? Expand
