Complimentary 30-Minute Consultation

Complimentary 30‑Minute Consultation

A no‑strings‑attached space to see if we’re the right fit

Starting therapy can feel overwhelming, especially if you’ve had past experiences where you knew within 30 seconds that a therapist wasn’t the right fit for you—and were still charged an “intake fee” that was higher than a standard session. We don’t want that for you.

At Luminary Counseling, we offer a complimentary 30‑minute consultation designed to ease this process, not add pressure. There is no obligation to schedule ongoing therapy, no sales pitch, and no expectation that you choose us. Our goal is not to convince you we’re the right fit; it’s to really listen to what’s coming up for you, share how we work, and help you make an informed decision about your care.

Why we offer this consult

We’ve been on the other side of the therapy room. We know what it’s like to sit down with a new therapist, feel that “this isn’t it” in your gut almost immediately, and still be expected to pay more than the usual fee for an extended intake—even while you’re still unsure you want to continue. That kind of experience can make it harder to reach out again.

Our complimentary consultation exists to remove as much of that pressure as possible. In this 30‑minute conversation, we’re focused on:

  • Hearing what has brought you to therapy now—your concerns, history, and hopes.

  • Getting a clear picture of the work you’re wanting to do in therapy.

  • Being transparent about what we actually do, our training, and how we approach the kinds of issues you’re naming (such as trauma, PTSD/CPTSD, relationship concerns, mood, identity, and more).

  • Collaboratively deciding whether our services align with your needs—without you feeling rushed into a commitment.

We want you to feel grounded and informed before you ever give us consent to treat you.

What happens during the consultation

This is a relational, conversation‑based meeting—not an interview where you’re being evaluated or “sold” on therapy. Think of it as an opportunity to try on the relationship, ask questions, and see how it feels to be with us.

In your 30‑minute consultation, we will:

  • Invite you to share what’s bringing you in, at whatever pace feels manageable.

  • Reflect back what we’re hearing so you can feel understood, not pathologized.

  • Orient you to how we work with clients—our relational, trauma‑informed, LGBTQIA+ affirming, and evidence‑based approaches (such as EMDR, CBT, mindfulness‑based therapy, and relationship‑focused work).

  • Discuss logistics like fees, insurance questions, in‑person vs. telehealth options, and scheduling, so there are fewer surprises later.

  • Give you space to ask anything you need to know before deciding whether to move forward.

If, during that conversation, it becomes clear that your needs fall outside our scope or another kind of support would serve you better, we will tell you that directly and provide referral suggestions rather than trying to “make it fit.”

Thoughtful matching with your therapist

You don’t have to figure out which therapist is right for you on your own. When you reach out, our founder and clinical director personally reviews your concerns and thoughtfully matches you with a therapist on our team whose training, specialization, and experience align with what you’re working through.

Our team works with:

  • Trauma, PTSD, complex PTSD, and Dissociation

  • Relationship and attachment issues, including marriage and partnership work

  • LGBTQIA+ and queer‑affirming concerns

  • Mood difficulties like depression and anxiety

  • Life transitions, burnout, grief, and general life dissatisfaction

  • Identity, self‑esteem, and finding more enjoyment in your life and relationships

  • People who seem to have success in other areas of their lives but can't seem to "get it together" otherwise

If we are not confident that we can competently support you, we will be transparent about that and offer referrals to trusted providers or resources to help you continue your mental health journey. The goal is that you get the right support, even if it’s not with us.

How to schedule your consultation

You won’t get stuck in an administrative loop trying to reach us. We’ve set up multiple, simple ways to request your free 30‑minute consultation:

  • Call us: Our 24/7 reception team will take your message, and a therapist will contact you within 24 business hours to discuss next steps and schedule your consult.

  • Secure contact form: You can submit your information through our HIPAA‑compliant form on our website, and we’ll respond within 24 business hours to coordinate a time.

  • Email us: Reach out at [email protected] to request a consultation with one of our providers.

FAQs About Psychotherapy

What is psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy is a collaborative treatment approach between a client and a therapist to address emotional difficulties, mental health issues, and behavioral challenges. Many different modalities are used in the art of psychotherapy in order to best meet the client’s treatment goals.

How can therapy help with mental health concerns such as anxiety and depression?

Therapy provides a safe and confidential space for individuals to explore their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. A therapist can offer strategies, tools, and support to help manage symptoms of anxiety and depression effectively. Not sure if what you’re experiencing in anxiety or depression? Your therapist can assess your symptoms and help you understand yourself better through therapy.

What types of therapy sessions are offered?

We offer therapy services both online and in-person. Sessions can vary in length and frequency based on individual needs. Options may include individual counseling, relationship counseling, marriage counseling, Teen and adolescent therapy, family therapy, EMDR therapy, and trauma therapy.

How does trauma therapy differ from traditional psychotherapy?

Trauma therapy requires specialized training in order to assess and appropriately treat trauma disorders. Utilizing EMDR therapy, a training professional can help you resolve issues that you are having in your life that talk therapy may not effectively address. Trauma happens in our bodies and so a methodology that integrates the body into the healing process is crucial.

How do I find a qualified therapist in Austin, TX?

You can search for therapists using online directories or platforms like psychologytoday.com or inclusivetherapists.com. Make sure to look for credentials such as LPC, LPC Associate, LMFT, LMSW, LCSW, or PhD to ensure you are working with a qualified professional. In order to best support you on your journey, we offer a 30-minute complimentary consultation aimed at helping us co-determine if working together feels like a good fit.

What are the benefits of in-person therapy?

In-person therapy can provide a more personal and connected experience between the client and the therapist. It allows for better non-verbal tracking and communication and a sense of presence. Getting out of a chaotic home environment and being attended to in the quiet and confidential space of our offices can help you ground and find the peace that may be lacking otherwise.

What are the benefits of online therapy?

Online therapy, sometimes called Telehealth, offers safe, convenient and confidential services from the privacy of your own home or any other convenient remote location in Texas. Research shows that telehealth is just as effective as in-person services, although it may not be appropriate for everyone. Check with your therapist to find out if telehealth is right for you.

How can I start therapy with a licensed professional?

To start therapy, reach out to a licensed professional counselor or therapist. You can schedule an appointment for psychotherapy services and discuss your specific needs and goals for therapy. At Luminary Counseling, we offer a complimentary 30-minute video or phone consultation for prospective clients. We know that finding a therapist can be challenging and just reading a bio may not give the full picture. Schedule a complimentary consultation today and learn more about how our services can support you!

What types of disorders can psychotherapy help with?

Psychotherapy can be beneficial for various disorders and diagnoses including trauma disorders (PTSD, CPTSD, borderline personality disorder, dissociative disorders), anxiety disorders, depression, Bipolar disorder, and other mental health challenges.

Am I required to have a mental health diagnosis to seek therapy?

No, many people entering therapy do so without any prior diagnosis or documentend mental health concern. Psychotherapy is a helpful way to learn more about yourself and your emotional world. Humans evolved to have feelings as the mechanism for how we get our needs met. If we don’t understand our emotions, we can struggle to meet our own needs or to get our needs met in relationships.

Am I required to have a “problem” to enter therapy?

While many people come to therapy with a current (or past) issue that is concerning, you are not required to be in a bad place or experiencing any problems for therapy to be supportive. Many people come into therapy simply desiring to know themselves better…And we are here for it!
